Why do the refill packs have a metallic look? Is it really compostable?

The metallic appearance comes from a minute amount of metal infused into the outer film to ensure ingredients stay fresh.

Yes it is compostable. The films (and label) in our refill packs are both fully compostable and ASTM D6400 (commercial compost) and EIN 13432 (home compost) compliant.
